Move over Mary J Blige. I’ve crowned Jully Black the new Queen of Hip Hop Soul. This Canadian born singer is Amy Winehouse, Sharon Jones, Beyonce, Jill Scott and Anita Baker all rolled into a beautiful, long-legged package. Her album “Revival” is the best I’ve heard since Ickmusic turned me onto Alice Smith’s “For Lovers, Dreamers, and Me”. Jully wrote 10 of the 11 songs on her sophmore effort, “Revival”. ‘DJ Play My Song’ is an awesome club song that’ll get you in the mood to party. ‘Seven Day Fool’ is a cover of the 1961 song by Etta James. You gotta listen to these two songs when you check out her MySpace page. The whole album is good, but below are two songs that I really like. I think I know my SIL well enough to predict that she’s gonna love Jully Black.
